After about two years of applying to be members of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), congress of the GOC finally voted in favour for the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) to be admitted as members of the Olympic movement.
The GOC held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Saturday at the Naa Deidei conference hall of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and as part of their agenda considered the application of GAF.
President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey who represented his federation recounted some of their achievements and activities in developing the sport since its existence in the country.
He mentioned that his federation was recognised by the National Sports Authority (NSA) in September 2016 and has since then won over 100 continental medals and currently ranked number three in Africa.
He mentioned that Ghana has the highest number of referees on the continent and the Technical Director of the federation has been elevated as trainer of trainers for Africa and the only female referee in Africa.
After their acceptance, Osei Asibey mentioned that “the GAF is grateful to the GOC Congress, hardworking GAF board, developing partners, senior advisers and admirers, the athletes brigade, coaches chamber, referees panel, media and all who have contributed to our status today”.
“After winning about 132 Africa Championship Medals, the focus is a World Championship Medal and our aggressive development in the Tertiary, Community and the SHS/JHS. We at Armwrestling say, Teamwork Makes the Dream Work. Thank you for helping us to build a preferred Sports Brand”.
