The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) joined the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s World Armwrestling Day with a competition at the Nungua Town Park in Accra.
The day which falls on every April 20 is used to engage communities and create awareness of the sport and also get more people to participate in the sport.
GAF’s celebration was sponsored by Betway as part of the Easter gala competition held at the said venue on the same day.
At the end of the exciting armwrestling competition, Godwin Sackey emerged winner in the Champion of Champions division and went home with an undisclosed cash prize, a trophy and some souvenirs from Betway.
In the men’s 50kg category, Adjetey Sowah came first followed by Emmanuel Panin and Listowell Sampah while Isaac Amugi also won the 70kg category followed by Prince Affum and Aziz Wahab.
Captain of the national armwrestling team, Edward Asamoah won the 80kg category after defeating Kenneth Arhin with Thomas Barnor finishing in third place.
Meanwhile, in the Betway Easter football gala, Emmanuel FC carried the day with a lone goal against Danbort FC.
President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, thanked Betway for partnering GAF to celebrate the World Armwrestling Day.
He said the sport was a traditional sport and an easy to play thing and called on Ghanaians to embrace it since it costs less to play armwrestling.
He mentioned that the national team, Golden Arms are currently preparing to participate in the Africa Armwrestling Championship to be held in Mali in July this year.
He called on corporate bodies to come on board to help the national team defend the title they won last year when Ghana hosted the African competition.
