President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah has commended the Ghana Amwrestling Federation (GAF) on their efforts in making the armwrestling sport popular.
He said the armwrestling federation was accepted two years ago but they have proven to be a force to reckon with in the sporting fraternity by setting high standards for other disciplines to follow.
The President made this statement when GAF President, Charles Osei Asibey paid a courtesy call on him and the first Vice President, Paul Atchoe, at the Olympic House in Accra on Wednesday.
The GAF President was accompanied by Secretary General of the World Armwrestling Federation, Mircea Simionescu – Simicel; Secretary General of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, Julian Boumsong and President of the Armwrestling Federation of Mali, Dauda Njayey.
The visit was also to formally invite the GOC to the opening ceremony of the Africa Armwrestling Championship on Friday, July 27, 2018 at the DG Hathramani Sports Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The GOC boss singled out the GAF President and applauded on his effort to making the sport big. He said although there have been little or no support from authorities, he has been able to make armwrestling a trending sport in the country.
He said the Ghana Olympic Committee is committed to the development of sports in the country and will be supporting all sporting disciplines in the country.
He also applauded the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Africa Armwrestling Championship for putting up a massive publicity campaign to make the event popular.
“The Africa Armwrestling Championship has now been the talk of town and we really appreciate the efforts made by the organisers to make armwrestling a sport of the moment,” he mentioned.
He assured the delegation that he would be around to support the championship for the success of the programme.
WAF Secretary General, Mircea Simionescu – Simicel, expressed his delight and appreciation to GAF President for kind of hospitality received since he arrived in the country.
He said the kind of support armwrestling is receiving in the country was commendable and noted that if the trend continues, Ghana armwrestling would take over the world.
He also mentioned that he was pleased with the organisation so far and hopes to see a successful and historic event.
AFA Secretary General, Julian Boumsong, also thanked the GOC for receiving them and thanked them for accepting to grace the occasion.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Majeed Bawah.
